equations numbering reset to 1 or not displayed

Dear all,

I have downloaded the example notebook for typesetting equations.

However, when I run it in jupyterlab, the numbering does not appear:

Strangely, if I open it in VScode, the equations are all numbered as 1 and equation* environments are not displayed.

What should I do ?
