Dependencies are out of date

Looking through some of the PRs and issues in this library, there seems to be a big need to upgrade some of the core dependencies of this library. This may cause compatibility issues for older versions; however, it seems that as it stands right now this repository is being left behind without some much needed maintenance work which would be a shame as it provides amazing value.

I am happy to make these changes, but I want to make sure this repository is still being actively maintained before offering help.
